Chapter Twenty-Two
Sean
“What do you mean ‘put my hands behind my back’? Are you arresting me? I’m the one who called you!”
The officer holds up a palm like a stop sign. “Sir, you have to calm down. Stay back. Keep your hands where I can see them. Arms behind back.”
I run my fingers through my hair anxiously. “But this is my house. I called you to remove an unwanted person. This is ridiculous.”
He removes the cuffs from his belt. “Ridiculous or not, you’re going to jail. Don’t add resisting arrest to the charges.”
“What charges?” This is insane—I can’t get my mind to keep up with each rapid, pitching shift of circumstance. My gaze shifts to Gary. Mouth tightly closed. He’s loving this. “I demand to know the charges.”
“Assault,” he states, eyeing Gary as he talks with the second officer. “We arrive. There’s a semi-nude man out front, pounding on the door with visible signs of an assault on his face. And you’re…wet…fully dressed as if you stepped into the shower to wash off the blood before we arrived on the scene. Your partner is pressing charges. We have a zero-tolerance policy for domestic violence.”
“Domestic violence? Me? All I did was break a shower fixer in my own bathroom while trying to fix it after he took it apart. He vandalized my house. He’s a home invader. I don’t want him here. Sir, I’m the one who called the police.”
He snaps open the cuffs. “You should have waited, then, and not taken matters into your own hands. A lot of hassle could be prevented if citizens waited for the police. Turn around, please.”
“This is nuts.” But I turn, presenting my back. My gaze locks on Gary. “You better be out of my house by the time I return.”
“Sir, don’t talk to the victim,” the officer says over my shoulder. Clink, and one metal bracelet cuts sharply into my wrist.
“Victim? He’s the instigator. He’s ruined my bathroom. He’s ruined my life.”
“Settle down.” The second ring clicks closed around my other wrist. “You need to work on that temper of yours.”
“I don’t have a temper. I’ve never hit anyone in my life.”
“Looks like you clocked him pretty good.”
“He’s lying. Filing a false report. Isn’t that a crime? Look at my hands. There’s not a mark on them.”
He inspects my fingers. “If there was another party involved we don’t know about now’s your time to clarify your previous statements.”
“No. No one.” My shoulders droop as I stare at the floor. This is fucking humiliating, but no way am I backing up Gary’s story with the cops and putting Skyler in jail. Even if I hadn’t believed his threat was a bluff—that he’d claim I hit him if I didn’t—I still wouldn’t have said a word against Skyler.
Sky’s been through enough in his life already. He doesn’t need more coming his way because of me.
I’m not sure what happened between Skyler and Gary, though I know Gary well enough to know he could incite the temper of Gandhi, but it must have been awful for Skyler to go off like that.
